PPTP Stands for Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. Your standard ISP Connection uses the PPP Connection or the Point to Point Protocol. PPTP takes that one step further and adds in a layer of security that you typically only have with a LAN Connection, but now it is over the Internet. Esentially it allows you to connect from one network to another safely and securely.
What do I need on my client
You really only require 2 things installed on your client. First you must have some connection to the internet. Next you need the VPN Adapter installed. Once you have those installed, you can configure the VPN adapter according to your VPN Network.
How does VPN work
VPN put down to it's basic principals, allows a lan to be run over top of the internet. You can connect to your internet provider, then connect via your VPN and you can get all your domain resources and/or network resources over the internet. This allows people to work from home and connect to their work network for programs/files they require. It does this with a layer protocal called PPTP or point to point tunneling protocol.
What does VPN allow me to do?
VPN allows you to connect to your network server from anywhere in the world, giving you access to shared files, programs, printers and everything else on that network. Typically it is used to allow someone to connect to their office network from anywhere in the world safely and securely.
Will VPN work on my existing network?
VPN will work on most networks if they are configured properly. You can even have it configured so that you can access your home network from elsewhere using free software tools available on the internet.
Is VPN Secure?
VPN can be as secure as you want it to be. With the 128 bit encryption available you can make your network connection very hard to crack.
I only have 2 computers, do I really need a HUB?
The simple answer is no, you don't need a hub if you just want to connect 2 computers. There is a type of cable called a Crossover Cable and it will allow you to connect 2 computers without the benefit of a HUB. The only down side to that is if you were to buy a 3rd or more computer you would not be able to connect them to the network. Hubs are cheap, reliable and allow for future expansion of your network, so Liberteks.com does not recommend the use of a crossover cable.
Can I easily plug in my new computer to the network?
If the new computer has a network card in it, all you would have to do is plug the cable into the back of the computer, plug the other end into the hub, and configure your network properties specifc to your network, such as computer name and the workgroup that the rest of the computers on the network are using.
